GUEST EDUCATORS CONCERT SERIES

Richmond Jazz Society’s Fall Concert Series
opens on Tuesday, September 12th with a musical Tribute to Thelonious Monk in honor of his upcoming 100th birthday!

 The Charles Owens Quartet

Randal Pharr, Charles Owens, Ayinde Williams, Kelli Strawbridge

Our featured performers for the evening will be the Charles Owens Quartet.  Originally from Alexandria VA, bandleader Charles Owens attended the Duke Ellington School for the Arts, Miami’s New World School of the Arts, and New York’s New School Jazz Program. During this time, Owens became influenced by such tenor sax legends as John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Wayne Shorter. Soon after, Owens was leading his own group, holding down a weekly Friday night spot at the New York City club, Smalls, plus playing regularly at other local clubs such as Sweet BasilChicago BluesThe Blue NoteThe Zinc Bar, and Birdland, among others.

Now living in Charlottesville, Owens’ latest ensemble of Randal Pharr (bass), Kelli Strawbridge (drums) and 19 year old piano phenom, Ayinde Williams, will present a moving tribute in honor of the centennial birthday of Thelonious Monk.

We will open this musical tribute with a very special guest speaker and former sideman of Monk, Dr. Larry Ridley! Dr. Ridley will share stories of his time with Monk and other artists presented in our VIRGINIA JAZZ: The Early Years  exhibition opening at The Valentine on September 19th.

If you purchase 4 or more tickets, we will reserve a table in your name. Free parking is available after 4pm on weekdays in the 3rd & Cary Parkway parking lot. The entrance is on the left on Main Street just after you pass 4th Street.
